Ferran Torres misses trip to Australia as Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez sends 20 players underground

Hours after losing their La Liga game to Villarreal, the FC Barcelona team embarked on a long flight to Australia to play their final match against the A-League All-Stars at the Sydney Accor Stadium.

Head coach Xavi Hernandez eliminated 20 players. Ferran Torres was unable to travel to Australia for personal reasons. The striker failed to complete the mandatory vaccination program on time, the Spanish club said.

Meanwhile, Riqui Puig and Oscar Mingueza are in the Catalonia squad for a friendly against Jamaica in Girona. Martin Braithwaite also stays behind, having been called up for international duty with Denmark, and Neto and Lenglet are absent from the squad due to family reasons.

The injured Dest, Pique, Nico, Pedri, S. Roberto, and Eric Garcia are also missing from the squad.

Barcelona went 2-0 to Villarreal at Camp Nou. The visitors took the lead in the 41st minute when Alfonso Pedraza played into the bottom left corner and swiped the ball past goalkeeper Ter Stegen.

While Barcelona only had the honor of playing, Villarreal chased European football. Villarreal doubled their lead after the restart when Adama Traore's erroneous clearance fell right at the feet of Moi Gomez, who didn't penalize in the 55th minute.

 FIFA President Gianni Infantino warned Canada, Mexico, and the United States to prepare for an "invasion" of football on Thursday as the venues for the 2026 World Cup were announced.
